Focus on the Easy Money

I used to have a bad habit of creating new ways to generate money every month. None of my new offerings had earth-shattering results, but that didn't stop me from trying to reinvent the wheel. Apparently, I didn't notice the pattern of working hard for little ROI.

I know many highly creative entrepreneurs who have similar issues. But then there's the bunch that never tries anything new and they're overworked and underpaid, too.

Sometimes it takes a simple question to wake you up and be smart about how you increase your profits. The question that always works for me is, "Where does most of my money come from?" (Make sure you actually look at your bookkeeping reports before you answer.)

In my case, it's my high-level mastermind programs and private coaching clients.

What about you?

Another great question to ask yourself is, "What's the easiest way I make money?"

Now the obvious way to use this information is to focus your energy on the things where you make the most money in the easiest way. But what if you don't enjoy the thing that makes you the most money? Or what if it's not easy to make sales? Or what if it's not time leveraged?

Ask yourself why it makes you the most money and you'll have your next step.

My mastermind is great because it's a one-time sale for which I receive payments from each participant for ten months. I don't have to sell it over and over again. It also happens to be heavy on coaching which means less intense content creation for me. And coaching is the favorite part of my business.

Leadership Skills Are Critical to Profits (For solopreneurs, too!)

Regardless of what you think, you need to be a leader. That means everyone: solopreneurs and employees, too. And no matter what stage you find your business in, start thinking of yourself as a leader if you want to see increased profits.

Each of you is a 'leader of self;' the leader of your position or your business. You have a slew of people you impact daily for which you may not be taking credit and you need to.

Why?

Because how you feel and what you think speak louder than words. Your thoughts generate emotions. Emotions generate vibration. And vibration dictates what happens in your reality every single nano-second.

This means that how you feel creates:

  • Disagreement within your team
  • Contractors who don't perform
  • Potential clients who say "no thank you" (even when you think it's an ideal match)
  • Family and friends telling you you're doing it wrong
  • Rising or declining profits
  • Which marketing strategies work and which ones bomb

Most people say actions speak louder than words. But actually, vibration speaks louder than words or actions!

The Reason it Seems Hard to Get Ideal Clients to Pay you What you're Worth

Focused on MoneyDarn near everyone gripes about money. I do it, too. We each have triggers about making, spending and saving money. But the one I hear the most about is not getting paid enough. Either you have an abundance of clients but they don't pay you for the real value you give or you don't have enough clients and you're scared to charge what you deserve.

You might not even know what you deserve because you've been brainwashed to take what you can get even if you only end up making twenty bucks an hour in the end. Maybe a few people gave you feedback that they can't afford your services and products and now you're convinced that nobody will buy at your current prices.

There are more than a few reasons why your ideal customers don't pay you what you're worth and it's not because they can't afford you! Think about it. If they're your ideal customers, then they see the value in what problem you solve and joyfully say "yes" to whatever price you set.

Structures to Keep You on Purpose

Focused on MoneyYou know the importance of goals, so you make them. You know what a bad habit looks like and notice when you're doing that thing that you do that sabotages your success. But how do you stop doing those things that keep you from your goals and start doing more of the good?

Create a structure that will support you in practicing one really good habit.

Just one goal can take many structures to support it. Which structure will work best? The one that is fun and doesn't feel like a chore!

One structure that works well with exercise is a 90-day challenge. You've probably seen them before. My workout studio just did the Little Black Dress Challenge. The person who went to the most classes in the month of December won a prize. We put gold stars on a chart each day we attended a class.

What I love about this structure is that it was focused on the one thing: Increasing our attendance. We were motivated by prizes, stars on a chart and the possibility of looking "hot" in our little black dress. It worked for me! I began going to class one extra day a week. Now it's a habit. And I feeeeeel awesome after each class which moves me closer to my goal of having my best body ever!

One of my friends from the gym wants accountability with her workouts. So she either shows up for her workout or pays me $50. This is one way I prefer not to make money. And only once has she ever had to pay me money. I used this structure with a group of friends years ago in a similar way and I got to my goal weight within a couple of months. In fact, all of us met our goals!

The 'Double A Strategy' for Making Money From Your Business (and other sources!)

Focused on MoneyI'm often asked how I doubled, or tripled, my income in a short amount of time. My answer is usually so simple that it often doesn't make a lasting impression upon those who hear the answer. They go back into their business and sift through all the other strategies they've heard will grow businesses and then get into massive action.

Or they procrastinate and complain.

And not much changes.

The strategies that make the biggest change in your income are often the least complicated, but take the most amount of faith. Faith that the inner work you do will change your outer circumstances. Faith that you can have wealth regardless of the people, strategies and resources in your life.

I call my secret weapon for success the 'Double A Strategy': Appreciation and Eager Anticipation.

During Thanksgiving, everyone is talking about appreciation. But they are preaching that you should appreciate the good things in your current life. While that is a great way to lift your mood and relax you, often it's not enough to change your life. And that's because most people see it as a list that they rattle off, citing what they are grateful for, but then moving right back into the same mindset about their life and financial situation.

Again, not much changes. You have a moment of 'feel good' and then it's back to reality.

But I use appreciation with a bit of a twist. I appreciate all that I have now and all that is coming. I used this technique to get out from under a pile of debt and double my income in nine months. I began appreciating what little money I did have to pay some of my bills and appreciated the few coaching clients I already had. I also appreciated the money that I envisioned coming to me in the future.

But there is one set of eyes that you may not be fully leveraging.

Hard Decisions that Impact Your Profits

Focused on MoneyThere are lots of ways to grow your business, work with clients and offer your products. Often it's challenging to know what to accept and what to decline. It's even more challenging when there is money offered to you and you desperately need it.

Knowing your criteria for saying yes or no to something is critical.

A big part of my criteria for choosing something is the amount of time it involves, and the specific hours and day an event is happening.

For instance, if a marketing strategy involves more than a few hours of my time before my team can implement, it's going to be a no for me. I work about 25 hours a week on average and during that time I'm teaching classes, coaching clients, writing copy and answering emails. If it can be done in one to three hours, it's creative and sounds juicy to me it gets a yes.

If a prospective client can only coach with me on a weekend, after 4pm Pacific or on a Friday, it's a ... big … fat … no. Family time is critical for me and that's why traveling is also kept to a minimum for work.

A couple of weeks ago I had planned to fly to Southern California for a day of masterminding with colleagues in the coaching world. I was really looking forward to it, even though it was a tight squeeze with travel plans I had with my family as soon I returned home. The timing of the event changed and it was going to push my family getaway back a day. [Read more...]

Monetize Random Acts of Inspiration

Focused on MoneyYou have great business ideas and opportunities coming to you everyday. Yes, even those of you in slumps have them. But having great ideas and opportunities doesn't always equal money in the bank. Even random acts of networking, marketing and planning don't necessarily mean any new business will come your way.

But wait, don't give up!

With a little intention, planning and strategy you can monetize all of your random acts of inspiration.

Let's take a speaking opportunity as an example. I'm offered many opportunities to speak on the radio, tele-summits, and interviews. I always say yes, no matter how big the crowd, when it's something I can do over the phone. If it's an in person gig, I'm super picky because it involves more of my time, energy, arranging childcare, putting on make up, possibly driving in traffic, flying on planes, etc.

Why do I say yes? Because I truly enjoy this way of delivering my message, it's easy for me and I see it as money in the bank even if the results aren't immediate. [Read more...]

Turn Fear into Profits

Focused on MoneyI missed a huge opportunity for learning back in 1999, because I was so busy trying to "get it right". And that missed opportunity taught me how to turn my fears about business and leadership into courage and powerful actions.

I signed up for a leadership course that was a yearlong process through The Coaches Training Institute. I was a young whippersnapper but had been through other leadership training and felt like I was ahead of the curve. Hilarious, because a real leader doesn't think that way.

There were many opportunities for us to speak 'on stage' and facilitate the group. I was so busy trying to get the exercise right and worrying about how I did that I missed the opportunity to improve my leadership skills.

If I could do it all over again I'd be hungry for feedback to create learning for myself. I'd be eager to be present, do my best and see how it all worked out. Instead my fear was running the agenda and I felt totally uncomfortable when I was standing in front of my peers. I was not having fun and my results proved it.

Now when I'm stretching out of my comfort zone I ask for as much pertinent data — feedback, input, masterminding and help — as I possibly can. I ask powerful questions about the things I'm wary of or need more expertise. I admit my ignorance or fears on the subject at hand so that I can transform it into knowledge and results.

You may find yourself sulking back into your comfort zone when instead you really want to stretch. Maybe you want to offer a new service but you don't know how it would all come together. Maybe you want to expand your business by hiring a new team member or mentor but your lack of money gets in the way of you taking the next step.

Take on the fear. Untangle the old stories, reality and intent. Face what is so, and let that drive you into a passion for taking on the task or dream with excitement and vigor. [Read more...]
