The One Percent Rule That Can Make or Break Your Entire Business Model

Business owners have three modes they gravitate toward:

A. Creative Maniac

B. Implementing the cool new strategy

C. Overwhelm (which can manifest as stress, denial, checking out, boredom)

Sure, there are some other modes, but these are where you’ll tend to play the most.

No mode is better than another. Just because you’re getting stuff done doesn’t mean you are happy, profitable or expanding your business.

Get Out of Your Box to Attract Ideal Customers

If you’re a business growth junkie, you’ve heard a million times that you have to know your target market. Most companies can spit out a profile of their ideal customer but nothing about it feels personal.

General knowledge of your market isn’t enough.

You’ve got to get intimate with them. You have to mentally and emotionally ‘get into’ their business. And once you know what keeps them up at night and puts a smile on their face, you need to find out even more.

How do they like their message delivered? Fast, fun or detailed? How far can you take your humor? How much information can you give them without throwing them into overwhelm? Do they like to be romanced or do they like it straight?

Once you know them as well as your family, then you can take it one step further.

Think about where you can reach these people in their day-to-day lives. And who can you partner with to reach them? How can you connect with them in an authentic way, where they feel your presence even if you say only a few words?

One of my favorite business events of the year is a JV Summit. It was designed to connect experts in my industry to create joint ventures together. It’s now one of the best masterminding opportunities of the year for me. One of the reasons I get so many new business growth ideas is because I’m forced to think about how my business could serve the other experts’ businesses. And when I learn about their services and products and I like them, I search my brain for how it could benefit my customers.

WOW Them with Your Freebie

Everyone tries to make their freebie sound like it’s going to rock your world. You enter your email address into their form in hopes of getting some life changing info, only to feel like you wasted your time after you get the audio, video, eBook or report.

It’s time to razzle and dazzle your peeps with some honest to goodness hot information or a free sample of your product or service. Brick and mortar businesses can join in on the fun, too. Creativity abounds!

Why give something away when you’re working on keeping more money in your pockets?

Offering something for free or giving a bonus with purchase can create a buzz that generates excitement. That has the potential to give you more clients, brand awareness and increase loyalty with existing customers. It also shows off the quality of your products and services. Some customers like to try before they buy or are more likely to say ‘yes’ if there’s an extra perk.

Some need-to-know things about giving away something in hopes of gaining more customers or renewing faith in the old ones…

Don’t:

  • Take a product or service you already have and start giving it away without some conscious thought about how it will impact your market and how it will get them to take the next desired step in your marketing funnel.
  • Be cheap or fast. Make it good or wait until you have the time, inspiration and resources to make the giveaway relevant and classy. This may be someone’s first and only point of contact with you. You’ll either turn them on or off.
  • Be cheesy or pushy in your marketing. If someone follows me on Twitter and all their posts are about getting their “free” offer, I run away. I want to know about it, but don’t cram it down my throat. Again, classy wins my vote.
  • Be chintzy about how much you give. Potential customers want a big enough taste, so they can make an educated decision about spending some bucks with you. Abundance attracts more abundance. I have given away so much of my time and I’ve never regretted a minute of it. Eventually your fans will buy.
  • Offer a free pen and think people will buy from you. Your freebie has to match the rest of your offerings. If you’re a massage therapist don’t offer a free ice cream. Give a five minute laser massage on one target area of the body, a free meditation on body relaxation, or a free class.

Do:

  • Give amazing value in the offer. Give something that could be sold on its own because it’s that good.
  • Create a graphic for the complimentary gift or bonus if it’s not a tangible item. There are many graphic artists who would happily create a book cover, cd cover or logo for your very hot freebie to make it look professional and give it “presence”.
  • Make sure the receivers of this fabulous offer know what to do after they receive it. Do you want them to talk to you personally or a team member? What’s the next product or service they need to check out if they liked what they got so far?
  • Make it easy for them to take the next step. Give them your website, contact info and any website links they need to get more information.
  • Offer your freebie on your Facebook Fan page, website, at speaking engagements and networking events. Include a link in your bio, underneath articles you publish, that points them to more info on your gift.
  • Give your gift a webpage with a full description and easy URL to send folks, when you’re speaking. See mine here. http://masterpeacecoaching.com/resources/free-cd
  • Have fun with this. This freebie can be worth six figures or more to you each year when you convert customers. Every time I pop a free CD in the mail, I see it as $10,000 coming back to me. I infuse it with powerful intentions.

There is only one way to WOW people: Be deliberate about your plan and execute with enthusiasm. Your complimentary gift is worth every penny and minute you invest in it.

Power to the give-a-way!

What You’ve Got is Hot

Any idea that pops into your head and makes you excited is a good one. How do you know that you should follow through on that idea? Trust yourself, take action and you’ll get your evidence.

Your inner guidance only gives you ideas that you have the resources and ability to create. In order to see the manifestation of the idea, I’ve got a couple of guidelines that will make the process easy and fun. Oh, and I did I mention profitable?!

Here’s my flow chart for ideas that generate profit:

Idea pops -->Get excited pondering the possibilities --> More ideas pop --> Write down your brainstorm --> Take first action to make it real --> Time opens up for you to take more action --> Map out simple one page plan to take idea to market --> Progress is made --> Create simple plan to launch into the market place --> Allow excitement to bubble up about this idea making waves in the market place --> Follow through with your plan with extreme confidence

Winners Ask Powerfully

One of my favorite books on attitude is The Aladdin Factor by Jack Canfield and Mark Victor Hanson. They say, “If you don’t ask, the answer is always no.” And they are right.

You have to ask for what you want from yourself, others, the Universe/God and your own Inner Guidance.

I’m a huge promoter of asking for what you want from your power when you need something from someone in business. If you feel wimpy, whiny, apologetic, justified, irritated or resentful, you might as well have a billboard above your head saying, “DISCONNECTED from my POWER”.

I highly recommend waiting to make important requests until you feel confident you are worthy of the other person saying, “YES!”. When you understand that you deserve to have whatever you want, you won’t have to worry so much about what you say. It all boils down to how you feel while you’re saying it.

Whether you’re asking for the sale or for a team member to step up their game, be clear about your desired outcome before you open your mouth. It’s also critical that you can concisely make your request. You don’t need a long-winded conversation about why you’re asking. Just ask.

Pause. Let them answer or ask a clarifying question if needed.

Then you can state your case powerfully. But this is not a courtroom. It’s a relationship. Even if you’re in a restaurant asking the waiter for fresh herbs on your salad, they are a human being who deserves your respect.

I recently went out to lunch with my gal pal and teleclass co-leader, Bridget Engel. She is clear about what food she wants and usually has several special requests for the wait staff. The way she asks is as sweet as honey. At the same time, the request is made as confidently as if she were the Queen of England. There is no doubt in her mind about them giving her no for an answer.

It’s powerful to watch. And she usually receives exactly what she asks for and sometimes a lot more!

Gnothi Seauton - Know Thyself

These words were inscribed above the entrance to the temple of Apollo at Delphi, site of the sacred Oracle. In ancient Greece, people would visit the Oracle hoping to find out what destiny had in store for them or what course of action to take. Many of them did not realize they had their own power to access their Divine Connection. The common belief was the Oracle had their answers.

From the ancient days of the Oracle, we have come a long way. But I still run into people who do not fully believe or understand how to access their own Divine Guidance.

The most asked questions I receive from people are "how do I connect and follow my inner guidance", along with "how do I know it's real". I always smile, because I recognize this place within me that can push or struggle to get an answer, especially when I’m feeling up against it. If you are having fearful thoughts or in a struggle mentally, it will feel like you are disconnected because you are on a different vibrational frequency. Think analog verses digital.

Receiving Divine Guidance is a part of your natural state and you are always connected no matter what. Because it is subtle, it can feel like nothing huge has happened. Our minds can think of Divine Guidance as being this very big earth shattering revelation. When in reality it is more like quiet, consistent whispers, with very loving and peaceful energy added to it.

When you listen and act upon your Divine Guidance, you follow your natural flow of energy, life feels fantastic and you may feel unstoppable. Your Divine Guidance speaks to you in the form of feelings, insights, inner knowings, and through your audio senses.

Radical Change for Profit

When my mentor and mastermind group told me they were confused about my brand, I became confused. What? I’m the Law of Attraction coach. Hello, people. Can you hear me?! Isn’t it obvious what I offer?

Apparently, they heard me fine - I was putting out mixed messages. I offered many solutions for lots of problems. I also led several workshops with various co-leaders and my potential clients were overwhelmed with the constant flurry of activity.

If I wanted to make my life easier and produce more profit, I knew I had to do something radical. At least, radical for me. I narrowed my niche, offered fewer programs and stopped co-leading so many courses. As soon as I made the decision, I knew it was right. But I also had some grief about what I thought I would miss.

I got over the grief quickly, when my whole business became more simplified.

One radical change requires another. The change in my business model also required me to be loud and proud about being a business coach who puts a hardcore focus on the inner game. I had to step into the spotlight and trust that what I offered was leading edge and that my ideal market would see that. My knees were shaking.

I had to trust that the changes I was making would lead to more profits.

Marketing Calendar - Every Business Owner Needs One

I seriously hated the idea of creating a marketing plan the first time I was advised to create one. I didn’t know where to start, it sounded hard and I honestly didn’t know what it meant.

After a few years I changed my mind about the marketing plan and I began creating one every year. As usual, I kept it simple but it was good enough to get me organized.

It covered:

  • What I was marketing
  • To whom I was marketing
  • How I was going to market
  • Who was going to help me

In truth, I needed more than this to be more powerful in my message and attract new customers. I needed to connect to my customers from my heart and stop trying to sell. That created the single biggest shift in my marketing. I enjoyed the process as a result. It made marketing fun!

Then another big a-ha moment came several years ago when I was doing a VIP day with my mentor. I was complaining about marketing and planning, and she asked if I wanted to see how she planned her marketing campaigns.

My reply, “Hell YES!”
